The visualization of real estate has been a big part of my career.  I’ve written before on our firm’s use of GIS, and it’s not a stretch to say that GIS has fueled the growth of my career.  GIS has more applications than simply visualizing things (analysis for instance), but I don’t think it has any better application that visualization.

One of the things that I’ve been doing lately has been sending time series aerial photo comparisons to clients.  Aerial photos showing the growth of a market tell a story in a way that words or numbers cannot.  I can tell you what new development was over a period of years, or I can send you an aerial and show you the transformation of a market.

There are various ways to do this although I like to use Google Earth because it’s so easy.  Most clients have Google Earth installed, so I can also export a KMZ from our GIS, send it to the client and they explore the time series on their own.

The aerial above shows a local industrial sub-market first in 2005, before the sub-market had popped, and then in 2009 after it had added several million square feet of space.

UPDATE: Maybe I should have mentioned how to roll back the time on the images.  In the toolbar there is an icon that looks like a clock.  Click on that and you’ll get a slider that let’s you go back in time.
