A topic very near and dear to my heart (or maybe my wallet… not 100% sure which one it is) is renewable energy. Our firm has a significant focus on the siting of solar power plants in the California desert. I’ve written about this in the past, but basically it boils down to the fact that California has a mandate to procure a certain amount of its energy from renewable sources, and solar energy is the most scalable of those sources. It also happens to be the case that all of the locations that are the most suitable for these plants to be built are within about 90 minutes of my office. It’s a natural fit for our firm to be involved in the land transactions between the current property owners and the solar development firms. One issue that we are still watching with some amount of caution is NIMBYism.
Saint Consulting had the image below on their blog. It’s from USA Today and shows “power plant” as one of the most unpopular proposed projects.
I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing that there is probably some difference in opposition if you were to break the power plant response down by coal, gas, wind, nuclear, and solar. Out of those, it seems like solar should be the most palatable for neighbors. You have no real safety issues with the plant like you would have with nuclear. You have no serious visual impact like you would with very tall wind turbines.
However, I will say that when we talk to people there are in some cases immediate knee jerk reactions of “no” to the idea of a solar plant going in. I think this knee jerk reaction comes from two places. First, we have been conditioned that it is ok for us to oppose things going in near us. It almost doesn’t even matter the proposal, Americans somehow view the development of anything as something that can be opposed (even if that opposition doesn’t take the form of loud organized opposition).
Second, I think that people know very little about solar energy plants and for that reason have an uneducated aversion to them. I think there are a lot of reasons that if you currently live in the California desert, that you should want as much solar energy developed as possible. First, solar plants create almost no traffic. It would be difficult to understand the allure of this simple attribute unless you live in California, but let’s just say that traffic is a problem in California like offensive line penalties are a problem for the Dallas Cowboys.
There are a number of other attributes of solar plants that make them preferable neighbors in my mind, at least preferable to alternative land uses, but I don’t probably need to go into detail here. Over the next 24 months I think this issue will sort itself out in California and I’m hoping that we land on the side of more, rather than less of these plants being built.
